How Lewis & Tolkien Changed the World

C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien are well known for sparing one another in their world-changing work.

But what about how they found each other?

In reading Alister McGrath’s Lewis biography, McGrath notes several reasons their relationship developed.

First was their shared value of Icelandic myth—gods, giants, and Asgard.

After Tolkien became convinced of Lewis’ passionate shared interest, he invited Lewis to assist in critiquing one of his poems.

Lastly, McGrath discloses that Tolkien had need of a specific kind of friend/mentor. Tolkien needed someone who would nudge him along to complete his work.

Lewis and Tolkien came together through making a “little Icelandic club.” Then they changed the world.
