Paul captured this idea of a metaphorical Christ when he wrote, “In my flesh I am filling up what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions” (Colossians 1:24b). Since the believers in Colossae could not physically witness Jesus’ sufferings, Paul understood that his own endurance served both literally and metaphorically to make Christ visible to them.
